He Ara Tika - The Right Path
The He Ara Tika programme is based in Taupō and managed by TeWhetu Dewes. TeWhetu has been with the programme for 4 years and over this time has assisted in matching a number of rangatahi with mentors from within the community. The programme is focused on building the self-esteem and identity of students within high schools. It is a community based initiative that is aimed at encouraging Rangatahi participation and success in school, as well as helping them develop further educational and career pathways for the future.
The programme is funded by the Ministry of Education and in any one year approximately 50 rangatahi are mentored. There are a number of He Ara Tika programmes running throughout Aotearoa, which train and place mentors with students aged between 13-17 years of age. The mentoring approach is on a one to one or small group basis.
All mentors are police vetted and must undergo a mentor training certificate, the costs of which are covered by the programme. Mentors volunteer their time and referrals to the programme come via whānau, schools, other students and from the community.
