Tuwharetoa Mighty River Power Development Group

Ngati Tuwharetoa hold mana whenua and kaitiakitanga over their rohe located within the Central Plateau.  As kaitiaki, nga hapu o Ngati Tuwharetoa have an intrinsic duty to ensure that the mauri and therefore the physical and spiritual health of the environment is maintained, protected and enhanced.  The taonga (treasures) in this rohe are very important to Ngati Tuwharetoa who state:

Ma nga hapu o Ngati Tuwharetoa ano wa ratou ake taonga hei tautoko ano hoki
Ma te whanuitanga o Ngati Tuwharetoa
Hei tautoko nga taonga tuku iho ki te iwi
Kia mau mana motuhake tonu ai
Te wairuatanga me te mauri ahakoa te aha.

The hapu of Ngati Tuwharetoa assert their custodial and customary right of tino rangatiratanga over their respective taonga and Ngati Tuwharetoa collectively will sustain and protect the life force of all tribal and inherited taonga.

The recent process of renewing the resource consents authorising the operation of the Waikato hydro system involved substantial consultation between Mighty River Power and Ngati Tuwharetoa hapu.

Ngati Tuwharetoa and Mighty River Power have been working together since Mighty River Power's formation in 1999.  In that time, the two parties have developed a robust working relationship, culminating in the signing of a long-term agreement in October 2002.

The agreement established a development group to manage the relationship between Might River Power and the Ngati Tuwharetoa Maori Trust Board.  The group is required to comprise three representatives of Ngati Tuwharetoa, one of whom is appointed by the Trust Board and three representatives of Mighty River Power.  The chair of the group is the representative appointed by the Trust Board.
