A lengthy period of consultation between Ngati Tuwharetoa and Genesis Energy began around 1993 when ECNZ (the predecessor to Genesis Energy) began the process to renew the resource consents to continue to operate the Tongariro Power Scheme (TPS).
Ngati Tuwharetoa ancestral lands are located in the Tongariro/Taupo region and are impacted by the ongoing operations of the power scheme. The consultation has enabled many complex and difficult issues to be worked through.
To mitigate the effects of the TPS on Ngati Tuwharetoa rohe and as a consequence of the extensive consultative process, a formal agreement was entered into on 13 November 2000 between the Tuwharetoa Maori Trust Board on behalf of Ngäti Tuwharetoa and Genesis Energy.
The Ngati Tuwharetoa – Genesis Energy Committee is responsible for implementing the agreement. The Committee meets bi-monthly to assess new applications for funding and receive updates on current projects.
A Hui-a-Iwi is held annually in March of every year to update Ngati Tuwharetoa on the Committees finances and activities for the previous year.
A key to the Committee's success and the progress of these objectives is the sharing of information between Ngati Tuwharetoa and Genesis Energy. This two-way process allows each party to better understand and work through new and ongoing issues as they arise.
