Tūwharetoa Schools Kapa Haka Festival 2009

16th & 17th September, 2009
Taupo Events Centre

This year the Tūwharetoa Schools Kapa Haka Festival was held on the 16th and 17th September at the Taupo Events Centre.  The Tūwharetoa Festival is a celebration of Maori Performing Arts for those schools and early childhood providers who sit within the boundary of Ngati Tūwharetoa and provides a platform for the entire community, both Maori and non-Maori to celebrate in participating and watching traditional Maori performing Arts.   It is a day where we are graced by kaumātua of the community who eagerly await seeing their mokopuna continue the art of mahi kapa haka.

As in previous years, this year’s Festival proved to be a huge success for all.  This year attracted almost 2000 performers; the most performers that the festival has ever seen over the 20 or so years that it has been running.  The array of kākahu that were worn by performers was evident of the hard work from teachers, parents and whānau working behind the scenes.  An estimated 5,500 spectators attended across both days and we were honoured to have the attendance of Paramount Chief Sir Tumu Te Heuheu on both days too.  Schools also took the opportunity to raise funds for their schools by selling crafts and a whole variety of kai at the Festival and these stalls were well supported by those who attended.

Much thanks to our major sponsors Tūwharetoa Genesis Group and Ngati Tūwharetoa Mighty River Power Dev Group and also to our other sponsors; Tuaropaki Trust, AVP Ltd Tauhara North No 2 Trust, Tūwharetoa Maori Trust Board, Lake Taupo Forest Trust - Lake Taupo Charitable Trust, Creative Communities NZ – Taupo District, Taupo Native Plant Nursery, Tūwharetoa Health – Auahi Kore, Waipapa Trust and East Taupo Lands Trust.  Without our sponsors it would be very difficult and potentially impossible to hold an annual festival such as this.   No reira, kaore e mutu ngā mihi ki a koutou!
